Business Advice: Be an agent of change

A man walks into a psychiatrist’s office.  “Doc, every time I see nickels, dimes, and quarters, I have a panic attack!  What can the problem be?

“Oh that’s easy” the doctor answers. “You’re just afraid of change”.

How many of us go through life virtually paralyzed because we are afraid of change, to try something new or different.

This fear keeps us from expanding our growth, knowledge, and success and limits our lot in life.

To break out of this cycle of fear we need to understand what fear really is.

Here’s two explanations of what fear really stands for;

False

Expectations

Appearing

Real

So how do we change or how can we be a change agent for others?

If someone is satisfied with their lives, will they change?  No, because they are satisfied.

If someone is unfit, overweight, or unhealthy, but they are satisfied with that, they are still unlikely to change.

Many of us have the ability to change the instant we become unhappy with our lives.

Others of us have to wait for a stroke or another disaster before we realize the need to change.

We see that there are two ends of the scale.  Some wait until the end and some change right at the beginning and some change just for the sake of change. Somewhere in there, there is a happy medium for you.

There is a simple formula that will allow us to understand the process of change and what we can do to affect positive changes in ourselves and in others.

(D x V) +FS > R

The “R” stands for resistance.  To overcome the resistance to change, what needs to be greater?  What can tip the scale to overcome our fear of change?  Let’s take a closer look.

The “D” in the formula stands for Dissatisfaction. Before you can change you have to have a level of dissatisfaction…

What builds dissatisfaction more than anything else?  “V” for Vision.

Let’s say that you are a kid living in an impoverished neighborhood. You don’t know any better life than that.  Are you dissatisfied with your life?  Not necessarily, you may be satisfied because you don’t know any better.

Why is it that when you are in business you need to consistently improve your business education?

Why do people hire a business coach or have a mentor, to help push them thru their comfort zone and to help them grow their vision.  They need help to look at what their next level is supposed to be.

Dissatisfaction takes a belief that there is something else out there.

One of the things I do as a business coach is to help my clients feel a level of dissatisfaction or discomfort, if they don’t do the work required to change.  Without a coach or a mentor you stay in your comfort zone because people don’t like feeling dissatisfied.  Dissatisfaction comes first but then we have to have vision and a belief that the vision is possible.

Those kids living in the impoverished neighborhoods can watch television and they can see other places in the world, but most have no belief that a different life is possible for them.  However, some do get a belief that it is possible.  Some of you reading this article are where you are today, because of the vision and the belief you had of a better life.  You believed it was possible.  That is why you have worked to make a better life for yourself.

My question is, how do we raise the dissatisfaction level for where you are now and how do we raise the vision of where you want to go?  Most of us are not experiencing change.

One of the fastest ways that I have found to raise people’s dissatisfaction is by having them write a check into their own investment accounts at the first of the month.  This check is from your business into your own investment or profit account.  An investment or profit account is an account that you can’t get direct access to.  If you take out $10,000, $5,000, $1,000 or even $100 a month, you then have little or no money left to pay the bills.

Is there going to be a level of dissatisfaction going on?  Absolutely!  How much harder are you going to work to pay off your creditor that calls you every day?  You have to create a vacuum that needs to be filled.  You have to start stretching yourself and expanding out of your comfort zones.

The next step of the equation is “FS” which stands for First Steps.

We have dissatisfaction, we’ve created a vision of what we want, but we don’t know how to start.

This is where a mentor or a coach can help.

Don’t look at eating the whole elephant all at once, just take it on one bite at a time.  Lee Iaacoca, states that the discipline of writing something down is the first step toward making it happen.  Take the time to write out your plan and break it into bite size chunks and get into Action.

By doing so, you will begin to break through the barriers in your life and stretch your comfort zone to reach a level of success you’ve only dreamed of.  Use this formula not only to help facilitate change in your life but to be an agent of change in the life of others.  Help them to understand and qualify their dissatisfaction, help them to build their vision what they want to achieve, and finally give them the first steps to move toward that goal.

By following this simple formula you can truly become an agent of change in your life as well as the life of others.

5 Tips to Turn Overwhelmed into Productivity

I was once talking to a business owner who had lost his focus in his business.  He would come to work day in and day out, doing the same thing day in and day out and not really get anywhere.  He confided in me that he always has this overwhelmed feeling and he felt that his business was lost in the fog and he did not where he was at and he actually forgot where he was going.
The feeling of being overwhelmed gave his life a sense of not being balance.
Does this sound like you and your business?  Don’t panic, you are not alone.   Here are a few ideas to get you back on track.
First.... Realize that it's almost impossible to achieve a work-life balance.  Your focus is always going to pull you more in one direction than the other.  You can't achieve balance but you can achieve  harmony between your work life and personal life.   Remember, you can't physically and mentally be in two places at the same time.  If you are at home don't mentally be at work and visa-versa.

Second... Realize what is going on.  You can't fix a problem until you admit you have one.  Stop pretending that you have everything together because eventually something is going to pop.  Once you start getting that feeling of being overwhelmed try to identify the triggers.  Then you can begin to work on being in charge of your attitude instead of letting something or someone trigger that negative feeling.

Third...  Identify your overwhelming triggers.  When we get the overwhelmed feeling, it's like our mind and body's circuitry goes into overload.  If we think about it and look back we'll be able to identify specific things or events that trigger that feeling.  Once we identify what these stressors are we can begin to take control back.

Fourth...Call time out.  The overwhelmed feeling hits us when we lose our focus.  Take 15 minutes and step back, maybe listen to your favorite music, go for a walk, or close your eyes and take a power nap.  You need to take some time to quickly recharge your batteries.

Fifth... Find meaning in what you do. Write a list of what's most important to you both professionally and personally.  Now determine how doing what you need to do now will help the people that are most important to you.  We find meaning in our work when we can figure out how what we do helps others.  It's easy to let down ourselves but it's a lot more difficult to know that you are letting down people that are important to you.

Stress is NOT always positive but if managed correctly, stress can be enhancing to both our performance and overall well being.

Recession-Proof Your Business

Though we are not out of the woods yet, it does seem that the business climate is slowly changing due to the natural cycle of business.  It's been a rough 4-5 years for a lot of businesses.

Why some businesses thrive while others implode during an economic recession remains a puzzle to many business-owning entrepreneurs.  Not all businesses must suffer during a down business cycle.

An overwhelming majority of my clients not only survived the downturn but thrived as well.  In fact when one of my clients introduces me all the partners say if it wasn't for Steve we'd be out of business like a lot of our competitors.

What separates successful businesses from those that fail during those down cycles?

They have planned for the future and have contingencies to confront whatever challenges arise.  They organize themselves are uniquely different and healthier approach to business.

An economic downturn can be overly challenging and devastating if you don’t put it into the proper perspective.  A business cycle very closely resembles that of the natural cycles of Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter.  Let think of a farmer, in the spring he is planting his crop getting ready for a harvest.  In the summer, his crop is growing and begins to harvest his crop.  In the fall he is preparing for the winter that waits ahead.

Let’s compare my analogy to the business cycle.  In the spring you need to cultivating business getting ready for the growth of summer.  In the summer you are feel great business is great but you understand that fall and winter are ahead so you need to plan.  You need to start paying down debt and save cash for when things slow down.  In the fall you need to begin to get ready for winter.  You need to start cutting the fat.  In the winter we a in survival mode but we begin planning for the spring that is just around the corner.

In the winter you need to look for opportunities to grow.  It’s a fact that during down economic times is when the true entrepreneurs begin to create their wealth.  Down economic times are times in which you can gain market share over the competition.  It’s a great time to grow through acquisition by buy up poorly managed competitors.

Currently we seem to be coming out of an economic winter, a serve one for that matter.  If you did not prepare, how can you survive and get yourself in a position to take advantage of the next business cycle?

Jack Canfield in his book Success Principles states a simple formula for success that can help us over come this winter business cycle.  E + R = O - Event + our Response = Outcome.  We all have a goal, an expected outcome but some event always seems to come our way to make us lose focus and advert our attention.  That because our response gets refocused on reacting to the event instead of focusing on our desired out come.

ActionCOACH founder Brad Sugars, outlines 5 Steps to how to focus on looking for the opportunities available instead complaining about how bad the economy is.

Step 1 – Get you Mind Set right
If you are focusing on the negative all you will ever see is the negative.  Look for the positive, look for the opportunities that are available.

Step 2 – Set New Goals
The playing field has changed.  You need to reassess where you business is and where you want to go.  Will your current goals still realistically get you to your final destination? Or, do you need to revise your short term goals and strategies?

Step 3 – Get Around the Right People
You need to surround yourself with positive people who share your vision for success. Do you have the right people working with you?  Do they have the skills and the will to help you navigate your business during difficult times?  What about your business associates?  Are they bringing you up or taking you down?

Step 4 – Create Quite Time to Think of New Ideas
It’s hard to stay focused during turbulent times.  You need to create quiet time each day to focus on your goals to help your mind to focus on what you need to do to get there.

Step 5 – Planning
It all starts with a plan.  When you have a plan you can now determine what do I need to do or learn to achieve my goals.

Help! I’m stuck in a rut!

A few years back I was standing at our kitchen sink, washing the breakfast dishes, looking out our kitchen window and I noticed this fly.  It was just flying in circles, climbing up and down the window screen desperately looking for a way out.   Feeling the fresh air, it could sense that its freedom was near.  This seemed to motivate the fly even more to try to get out.

I realized that if I didn't give the fly any help, it was destined to be flying in circles all day, and I knew that the buzzing would begin to get on my nerves.  Eventually my son who was 3 years old at the time came over and  pushed the screen open to give the fly an opening to finally break through to freedom.

As I continued to wash the dishes, I was amazed that the fly just kept going up and down in the same meticulous manner.  The path to freedom was just inches away but it seemed stuck looking in the same places to find a small hole to break through.  When I was done washing the dishes and contemplating what had just happened, my son came over and asked me, “Why didn't it just fly away?”  I thought about it for a moment and answered him that the fly never stopped to think that he could.
How many of us are unknowingly doing the same thing?  My son's question made me think about how many businesses can't move forward.
How many of us can’t break through to that next level of success because we are stuck in our own comfort zone?  How many business owners continue to do the same thing over and over again expecting different results?
But just like the fly on my window, we are stuck in our comfort zones, imprisoned by our routines, stuck doing the same thing over and over because it is just familiar to us.  A wise sage once said, “An imprisoned individual cannot set himself free.”
Eventually the fly did break through to freedom, but only when my son came over and repeatedly pushed it toward the opening, so it could finally break through to the freedom it so desired.
Who do you have that can give you more perspective and will continually push you toward the opening so you can break through to your next level of success?
As a business coach, I help my clients see the forest through the trees, give them the knowledge they need when they need it, and hold them accountable week in and week out to reach their goals.

Stop Selling!... Build relationships!

Loading

What makes a sales call a success or failure?
Are there secrets to sales success?

With today's economic conditions, there's not much "low hanging fruit" to be picked.  In today's economy, relationships count more than ever.  Only the truly professional salespeople have survived over the past few years.

If you look at your industry, there are probably enough people still wanting to buy your product or service to keep you busy all year long.  Your challenge is, how do you increase your market share or what I like to say get your "unfair share"?
Sales are tougher to generate in a bad economy than a good one.  Nevertheless, why does it seem that some salespeople seem to do well in all types of environments?  When the economy is good, it's relatively easy for even bad salespeople to make a living.  In a good economy, often, salespeople make sales by just contacting a high volume of prospects without developing any relationships.  There is so much "low hanging fruit" out there that just about anyone can make a sale.
There is a difference between the successful professional salesperson and everyone else.  When business is good, the majority of salespeople are just trying to get as much business as possible.  They are usually more "me" focused, than "client" focused.  Much of sales training emphasizes closing techniques.  The right sales approach involves building the client relationship, not just making the sale and moving on to the next prospect.

My TOP 2 secrets to sales success are:
  1. STOP "closing sales" &  START "opening relationships"
  2. DON'T "sell" your clients, HELP them "buy"

OPEN RELATIONSHIPS... BE CLIENT-FOCUSED
Unfortunately, if you don't have a relationship it is very hard to penetrate your prospect's trust to get them to open up to you.  Just think about it.  How many sales calls do you get daily from salespeople trying to sell you something.  I can just imagine your response when the phone rings, "Oh boy, another salesperson trying to sell me something. Let me stop everything I'm doing to see if they have something I want to buy right now!"  If you are like me, you are trying to think of every excuse to get off the phone.

The biggest mistake salespeople make is trying to jump ahead in the sales process before we build any credibility.   We start asking questions before we have earned the right.  We need to earn the right to start a relationship before they'll want to engage in a relationship with us.  We can't expect that just because we've called, the prospect will want to develop a relationship with us.  Let alone want to do business with us.
So, how do the professional salespeople break through the clutter of all the other sales calls their prospects are bombarded with every day?   One strategy is to utilize current relationships.  Using current relationships, professional salespeople are able to get their prospect's attention, but most importantly, they gain some instant credibility in the mind of the prospect. Recommendations to prospects come from clients with which we have opened and built solid relationships.

Professional salespeople are always "client" focused.   They understand that their client is thinking WIIFM or "what's in it for ME".   When you focus on opening relationships, you'll always be client-focused.

DON'T JUST SELL... HELP THEM BUY
Once you have opened the relationship and gained credibility, you can really begin to engage people.  Professional salespeople understand that people do not like to be sold, but they love to buy.  ActionCOACH's definition of a salesperson is "Professionally Helping People to Buy".

How can you tell if you are selling someone or helping him or her buy?
The answer is quite simple.  When you meet with potential clients, are you "telling" or "asking"?  The professional salesperson's secret weapon is questions.  ASK open-ended, needs-based questions.  Find out...

  • What is the client trying to accomplish?
  • What features are most important to the client?
  • How can your product or service help the client?

When you are asking questions, you are building the relationship!

Find out what you can do for your client and make sure he or she knows WIIFM or "what's in it for me".  By asking questions to determine needs and showing benefits, you build up each client relationship.  As you open more relationships and build each one, you gain more credibility.  As you gain more credibility, you create even more relationships.

That's why there are two secrets to sales success.  You cannot have one without the other.  A professional salesperson must continually open new relationships and nurture those relationships by helping clients.  Follow the two secrets and your credibility in your industry is sure to increase, helping you make even more connections with new prospects.

So, how do we break the barrier to get through to these prospects and get them to want to engage with us over everyone else trying to get a piece of their limited and precious time?  We need to first create curiosity.  Make the prospective clients want to know more by building our relationship with them.  Don't forget to ask questions and show what's in it for them.  Let's face it-- if we can't get them to want to engage with us, the chances are slim that we are going to make a sale.

Do you have a Black Belt in Business?

What does it mean to earn a black belt in the martial arts?  To become a trained killer.  No,  martial arts training is a lot more.  It's a form of self-defense and exercise.  But, most importantly, it is a philosophy or a way of life.
I got involved in the martial arts at a very early age, but didn't receive my Black Belt in Tang Soo Do Karate until I was almost 30.  I found martial arts was not only a great form of exercise and self defense, but also taught me how to survive the battles of business and life.  When I look back, what I really learned was the importance of goal setting, focus, determination, and the use of systems.
Each martial art has a series of belts or levels, which each student strives to reach before they can become a black belt.  This systematized approach provides students a process to gain mastery over a particular level of skills before moving on to the next level.  Showing the importance of setting end goals with milestones along the way to keep you on track.
My sensei (Karate instructor) taught me that each level you reach before a black belt, you are just learning Karate but once you become a black belt, you are now doing Karate.  Once you reach black belt, you now have the knowledge and wisdom to apply what you have learned.  The journey doesn’t stop there.  There are new goals and milestones as you reach for the higher levels of being a black belt.  As a business coach, I have found this same systematized approached can also be applied to any business.
When do you get your black belt in business?  When are you “doing” business instead of learning business?  At ActionCOACH we have a definition for this scenario, “A commercial profitable enterprise that can work without you the business owner”.
So, how get a black belt in business?  Let’s take a look at the 6 belts you must master before you can be a black belt in business.
White Belt:  At this level, the emphasis is on basic business mastery over time, team, & money.  It’s about getting the chaos out of your business and getting organized.  It’s about making sure you can make payroll and that your employees understand their roles & responsibilities in your organization.  It’s where you learn to delegate tasks to your team, so you can concentrate on developing higher level skills needed to obtain your business black belt.
Yellow Belt:  This level is where you work on creating predicable cash flow in the business.  You develop your Niche and USP (unique selling proposition), so you can start selling on value and not price.  You find out why your business is unique and valuable to your customers.
Green Belt:  At this level, you are working on creating efficiencies in your business.  You are starting to develop systems that will run your business so you don’t have to.
Blue Belt:  Here you learn how to get the right people “on the bus”-- the right team players, who will run your systems that will run your business.
Red Belt:  This level is where we start to see all your hard work come together.  You’ll start to see the synergies of your systems and team develop.  Now, you start grooming your general manager who will run your business for you.
A Black Belt is a White Belt that never gave up!Black Belt:  Now you’ve made it!  You’ve created a commercial profitable enterprise that works without you.  You are now an entrepreneur with a business black belt!  You are  generating passive income from the business.  You can now take the skills and knowledge which you have learned and apply them to other businesses or start investing your profits, so your money is making money.

Lead and they will follow, 3 tips to get your team to follow

52987main_geese Why do geese fly in formation?  Scientists found that it is for 2 reasons.  The first, is to conserve their energy.  There is less wind resistance flying in groups, enabling them to fly greater distances with less effort than birds flying solo.

The second reason is that they can easily keep track of each other. By contrast, pelicans who fly alone, beat their wings more often and have higher heart rates than geese.

As a leader in your company do feel like the goose or the pelican?
Is your team following your lead?
Does your company or department run like a well oiled machine?

If not, here are 3 tips to help you become the leader your employees want to follow…

1. Communicate EffectivelyTo be a good leader, you must first be a good communicator. Your team must clearly understand your vision, goals, and expectations in order to help you accomplish them.  True communication is the response that we get.  Good communicators watch for verbal and non-verbal clues that their messages are being received and understood.

This is especially important when starting a new initiative or adding a new team member.  Schedule enough time to review objectives thoroughly and foster an environment that encourages staff members to ask questions.  Have them mirror back what you have said to be sure they understand.

I found that one of my clients was moving too quickly through new material.  I coached this client on taking frequent pauses when giving instructions  to make sure his team understood what he wanted before he went onto the next subject. Implementing this simple strategy improved his team’s effectiveness and his business’s profitability tremendously.

2. Lead by example
”A leader is one who knows the way, shows the way, and goes the way.” (John C. Maxwell)  Reflect on the words you use and actions you take in front of your team.  Do you pitch in with the “grunt” work during extra busy times?  Do you have stated work hours but, consistently show up late?  Does the quality of your work inspire your team? Be the rule you want your employees to follow not the exception.

3. Be Congruent
Apply the “golden rule.” It is impossible to build a positive, motivated team while possessing a negative attitude and treating others poorly.  Ever hear your boss speaking negatively about a co-worker?  Did you wonder what he was saying about you?  The bottom line is we need to be congruent as leaders.  Being respectful and appreciative of your employees will inspire them to treat each other and you with respect.

To “BE” a leader, you must “DO” what leaders do and then you will “HAVE” that leaders have. Leadership comes from within.  Focus on making the internal changes necessary to become the person you want to “BE”,  that will inspire others to follow. The people around you will see the changes in your behavior, in your actions and in the decisions that you make. You will soon create a desire in others to follow your lead. Success is contagious.

You will also begin to see success is neither “yours” or “theirs”, it is “ours”.  When the lead goose gets tired, he falls back and lets a new leader take over. They all share in the work and in the success of getting to their migration point. A true leader knows it is not about “me” it’s about “us”.

As Zig Ziglar said,” You will get all you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want.”

Wishing you much success,

Coach Steve

5 Keys to Understanding Success

Success I entered Business Success in the search engine on Amazon.com and found 64,320 paperback books, 22,753 hardcover books, 4,170 Kindle versions and 358 Audio books available.

In addition, there are thousands of blog posts and other articles discussing the mystery of success. Each author staking a claim on knowing the “Secrets of Success.”  With so much written on the subject how can there be any more secrets?  How is it that so many people are wresting with success instead of basking in its glory?

Tom Hopkins defines success this way,  “Success is the continuous journey towards the achievement of pre-determined, worthwhile goals”.   In all of my research, this is the best definition I have found.

Let’s take a closer look at the meaning of this power sentence.
  1. Continuous Journey – This first key is embracing the idea that achieving success is not a destination but a continuous process or journey.  Think about a baby who is  learning to walk.  Does he say,” Well, I took that first step, now I am done.”  No, he says, “ Wow! I took that first step, what’s next?”
  2. Towards – The second key is forward movement.  Successful people are constantly moving forward, towards what they want.  They set aside their fears, move around obstacles and keep going.
  3. Achievement – The key here is recognizing that success is not just one big triumph, but a series of small accomplishments along the way. Think about that baby again.  First, there was turning over, then crawling, then pulling up, then walking.  Each milestone is celebrated and inspires the next one.
  4. Pre-determined – I think of this key as thoughtful pursuit.  What you deem to be important.  Not someone else’s definition of success, not the “stuff” that happens along the way but, what you determine to be important.  It is also critical to establish the right path for you.  Some want the non-stop flight while others prefer travelling the country roads.  The destination is the same.
  5. Worthwhile Goals – The last key is clarity on the “must have,” goals.  The goals we set that we will do anything in our power to achieve.  This is not to be confused with, “the things that must be done.”  If writing a book is the goal, research must be done.  However, if the author gets bogged down in doing research, the book does not get written.  Clarity is the key to setting those “must have” goals and performing the “must be done things,” that further the achievement of them.
Understanding these 5 keys will help unlock your secret to success.  Remember, as with any journey it is important to pack a lunch and wear comfortable shoes.
Wishing you much success,
Coach Steve

What does attitude have to do with success? Everything!

happysad face What separates human beings from any other creations in this world? It is the ability to translate thoughts into the spoken and written word so that our ideas can be shared.

The spoken word gives us the ability to share our ideas and emotions with others, it builds community.  Synergy is created as we exchange words, allowing people to combine ideas and mulitply our strengths.

Written words give us the ability to make permanent records, to create a history for future generations to study.  Hopefully, learning from the mistakes and building on the successes of those who came before them.

Is it possible to quantify the value of our words? In the Hebrew language each letter has a numerical value. Historically, Jewish sages have used these values to find hidden insights into words from matching the numerical values of the letters that make them up.

Can a similar connection be found in the English language? Could we find the secret to having the complete life that so many of us are in searching for? Can uncovering the numerical values of the letters in our words provide that answer?   With the help of a friend, this is what we discovered.

Each letter is assigned a corresponding number ....
A=1  B=2 C=3 D=4 E=5 F=6 G=7 H=8 I=9 J=10 K=11 L=12 M=13N=14 O=15 P=16 Q=17 R=18 S=19 T=20 U=21 V=22 W=23 X=24 Y=25 Z=26

Now let’s see what makes life complete or 100%....

Hard Work = H+A+R+D+W+O+R+K = 8+8+18+4+23+15+18+11 = 98%
Knowledge = K+N+O+W+L+E+D+G+E = 11+14+15+23+12+5+4+7+5 = 96%
Love = L+O+V+E = 12+15+22+5 = 54%
Luck = L+U+C+K = 12+21+3+11 = 47%

If it is not Hard Work, Knowledge, Love, or Luck, what is it?  What makes 100%?

Is it Money? ...No
M+O+N+E+Y =13+15+14+5+25 = 72%

Leadership? ...No
L+E+A+D+E+R+S+H+I+P = 12+5+1+14+5+18+19+9+16 = 89%

What is the one thing that we alone have the power to control?  The one thing we have the  power to change or improve that will make a difference in our lives?

ATTITUDE!
A+T+T+I+T+U+D+E = 1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5 = 100%

It is our attitude toward our life and work that impacts 100% of our lives.  Whether positive or negative it is the attitude we adopt when facing the good and bad that affects everything.

Attitude is EVERYTHING!

Change your Attitude...Change your Life!

Wishing you much success,
